Hi. How are you?
I'm Jonathan. I believe the camera is a tool that can shake the foundations of power. I focus the lens on people building a better world.
In 2010 I picked up filmmaking because I noticed media wasn't really paying attention to the grassroots. I filmed local artists and organizers and have covered movement spaces since - sticking around because I see a spark. I still see that fire in you. Passionate about telling stories of risk takers and their fight, I believe in community building and the strength of the collective. I've been very privileged, especially in spending time with inspiring people and being welcomed into different communities. Everything has been humbling. I owe many people dinners and wouldn't be here without them. Their guidance, friendship, teamwork, honesty, and spirit of defiance I continue to cherish.
Born 'n raised and currently in Wisconsin, I graduated from
UW-Madison in Political Science and studied film with doc|UW-Milwaukee. There I directed a series about student life - focusing on the LGBTQ Resource Center and the Women's Resource Center. I've been fortunate - In DC I became an elderly intern and Production Assistant with Al Jazeera's Fault Lines, and then a Production Coordinator of the Kennedy Center Honors Films. I moved to NY to be a Senior Producer and Co-Creative Director of the social and economic justice program The Laura Flanders Show. When Standing Rock heated up in September 2016 a call was made, and I left my job and moved to the resistance camps. There I met some folks and we formed a film collective. We're currently in post-production on the feature documentary The Sacred & the Snake. My role in the project is C0-Director, DP, and Assistant Editor. Our team is making steps towards the finish line.
When not working I visit the fam, bike the city, play baseball with my niece and nephew, shoot hoops, dance poorly, swim in the lake, listen to HDTGM and watch historically bad movies - aka masterpieces - (the latest was Double Dragon). Bad movies are often the best.
