Hi. How are you?
I'm Jonathan. I believe the camera is a tool that can shake the foundations of power. I focus the lens on people building a better world.
In 2010 I picked up a camera because...why not? It's fun. It has never felt like work. I noticed media not paying attention to the grassroots, so I filmed local artists and organizers and have covered movement spaces since - sticking around because I see a spark. Passionate about telling stories of risk takers and their fight, I believe in community building and the strength of the collective. I've been very privileged, especially in spending time with inspiring people and being welcomed into different communities. Everything has been humbling. I owe many people dinners and wouldn't be here without them.
I graduated from UW-Madison in Political Science and studied film with doc|UW-Milwaukee. In DC I became an elderly intern and Production Assistant with Al Jazeera's Fault Lines, and then a Production Coordinator of the Kennedy Center Honors Films. In NY I became a Senior Producer and Co-Creative Director of the social justice program The Laura Flanders Show. In Standing Rock I helped form a film collective. We're currently in post-production on the feature documentary The Sacred & the Snake. My role is C0-Director, DP, and Assistant Editor. Our team is making steps towards the finish line.
When not working I visit the fam, bike the city, play baseball with my niece and nephew, shoot hoops, dance poorly, and watch historically bad/bonkers movies - aka masterpieces - (the latest was Hello Mary Lou: Prom Night Two).
